The Curiosity rover has already beamed back plenty of stunning Martian images. Now the rover has turned on its camera at night to reveal another side of the red planet.

Using white LED lights , the rover illuminated the Martian rock seen in the top image — one of the rover's first nighttime pictures. The second image reveals the same rock in a different light — ultraviolet, to be precise.

Ultraviolet light can reveal fluorescent materials on the surface of Mars, and this image may reveal some such materials. NASA scientists are still poring over the images for clues, however.
