Inside the target chamber above, scientists launch charged particles at various targets for equipment calibration and fusion research.

Many of the charged particles are deuterons — collections of one proton and one neutron. Scientists accelerate these deuterons through the chamber in the foreground before hitting a target sample placed in the middle of the chamber.

The other cylindrical tubes emanating from the chamber collect the particle debris of these collisions. Scientists hope that some of the work done with this accelerator will reveal more about the nuclear fusion that occurs within our sun.
