Etched Nano Canyons

Scanning Electron Microscope images reveal canyon-like structures underlying the lenses used for the National Synchrotron Light Source II.

Those "canyons" in the image above are much smaller than you might think. These nanoscale structures form lenses in the upcoming National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

With these lenses, scientists can focus x-rays to produce high intensity beams. The lenses will also jettison beams at the new synchotron into new realms of brightness — 10,000 times brighter than their predecessors at the laboratory's current light source.
