Every year, millions of revelers from around the world watch as the New Year's Eve Ball drops in Times Square in New York. This year's ball features over 32,000 Light Emitting Diodes and weighs almost 12,000 pounds.

Engineers make the dome by connecting thousands of crystal triangles. These triangles of varying sizes link together to form a geodesic dome — an approximate sphere. Triangles with different sizes are necessary to form a more spherical shape.
