Solstice Lunar Eclipse
In 2010, a lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice — an extremely rare event.

This 2010 photo shows several phases of the moon during a winter lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses occur when the moon falls into the Earth's shadow — causing slivers of reddened light that pass through the Earth's atmosphere to illuminate the moon.
This wasn't your run of the mill eclipse, however; it happened on the winter solstice. According to NASA, this has only happened twice in the past 2000 years.
